What is Insulation?

Insulation is a thermal barrier that prevents the transmission of heat. A well insulated home will stay warmer in winter and cooler in summer. Insulation maximises the efficiency of mechanical heating and cooling systems by reducing heat (or cold) penetration from outside.

There are two main types of thermal insulation available - bulk insulation and reflective insulation. The type or combination of insulation is dependant on the climatic conditions of your area.

Bulk Insulation (most commonly known as insulation batts) is most effective in cooler climates. It creates air pockets that prevent the transmission of heat because still air is a very good insulator. Bulk insulation comes in many different forms, but is most commonly made of mineral wool or glass fibres.

Reflective Insulation reflects radiant heat, making it very effective at preventing heat gain from the sun in warmer climates. It is generally made from aluminium foil on a paper or plastic substrate.

A combination of bulk insulation and reflective insulation is effective in temperate climates that experience a warm summer and a cool winter. The combination of bulk insulation and reflective insulation means that the house is protected from heat loss in winter by the bulk insulation and heat gain in summer by the reflective insulation.

People who live in insulated homes will experience a more comfortable indoor climate year-round and pay less on energy bills.
